What We offer

Above and beyond the tangible rewards and benefits, you’ll find a career that inspires pride and has true purpose. We understand that benefits remain important and are keen to ensure those who work with us stay enthusiastic and positive about every aspect of their career with us.

Your Salary
Your starting salary will normally be at the minimum point of the grade you are appointed to. A cost of living increase is normally awarded in April each year. You will be responsible for your own tax in your country of domicile.

Your holiday entitlement

You will be entitled to four working weeks local leave per year. In some countries, where working and living conditions are particularly difficult, stressful or insecure, alternative Rest and Recuperation (R&R) arrangements to local leave may exist. This will vary from country to country. For contracts of 19 months duration and over, you will also be entitled to 4 weeks mid-contract home leave on completion of the first 12 months of employment.

Flights and baggage

You will be entitled to economy class airfares for yourself and your family (if applicable) from and to your home country at the beginning and end of your contract and to enable your mid-contract home leave. Linked to each return flight is an excess baggage allowance of up to 30kg per person.

Insurance cover

Save the Children has a medical insurance policy covering all Internationally appointed staff and their accompanying family members. The scheme covers medical expenses in country of posting, emergency evacuation costs and continuing medical expenses in your normal home country in cases where free treatment is not available. In addition, you (but not your family) will be covered by a personal accident policy. Full details of these policies are available on request and will be provided on appointment.

Living expenses

Save the Children will provide free, furnished and equipped accommodation. Save the Children will cover, as appropriate, all other reasonable in-country living expenses, e.g. utilities.

Your children’s education

We provide an education allowance for up to three accompanying children. Details are available on request and will be provided on appointment.

Taking a partner or your family to your new postings
Most international posts enable you to take you partner and/or family, unless security or other considerations prevent this. We will support up to three accompanying children. See individual jobs for more details.

Your pension
Save the Children operates an Occupational Money Purchase Scheme (OMPS), which is open to all employees on a permanent contract and to employees who are on a fixed term contract if their contract provides for six months of more total employment. The OMPS is a contributory scheme, and members will not be contracted out of the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme (SERPS). Both yourself and Save the Children will contribute a percentage of basic salary each month into the pension. The contribution increases in line with your age. The Employee contribution rates are between 3% and 5% of basic salary. The OMPS also provides for a death-in-service benefit which is a lump sum payment of 3 times your salary. This benefit is secured through a separate life assurance policy that Save the Children has arranged on behalf of OMPS members.

We cannot advise you on whether or not to join either of the pension schemes. You will be provided with scheme details and application forms at the time of commencing employment.

Expensive Posting Allowance
Save the Children UK acknowledges that the cost of living in some countries compared to living in others can differ significantly. This is why we offer an ‘Expensive Posting Allowance’ for a small selection of locations where we work. International Staff who are eligible to receive an Expensive Posting Allowance will typically receive £3,275 annually, although the allowance may be higher in some locations. If the role you are applying for is eligible for this allowance it will be stated in the position information.

Complexity Allowance for Country Directors
To distinguish between the size and complexity of our country programmes, Save the Children UK has put in place a Complexity Allowance. Country Directors, whose country programmes meet our complexity criteria will receive £3,000 annually. If the role you are applying for is eligible for this allowance it will be stated in the position information.

Hardship Allowance
Save the Children recognises that some of our staff are required to work in fragile locations where living and working conditions are significantly difficult when factors such as Security, Accommodation, Communication and Quality of Life are considered, and designate these locations as hardship locations. To recognise the difficulty of living and working in hardship locations Save the Children will provide a Hardship Allowance. If the role you are applying for is eligible for this allowance it will be stated in the position information.
